New York City Girl.

Just back from the incredible city that never sleeps ! My first time in NYC was a total success, I mean what a city. I will share some of the highlights from the trip with you here.

We were obviously in NYC to set up the exhibit ‘Memory&Future Future&Memory’  featuring works by Firouz FarmanFarmaian and Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar at the Shirin Gallery in Chelsea. The exhibition curated by Janet Rady, explores two Iranian artists’ different interpretations of memory and the past.

Chelsea has the highest concentration of art galleries I’ve ever seen ! Apart from our exhibit we had time to visit some very cool galleries such as Taymour Grahne, Gagosian and the David Zwirner galleries to name a few. You could spend entire days scouting the New York art scene it’s so diverse !

We decided to stay in Queens, one of the most multi cultural places on earth. You could discover food from a different country every day and it’s a quite tranquil place to live in, making a nice difference from the hectic ambiance of Manhattan.

For thrift stores you need to check out Bushwick where all cool, cheap and alternative stores are. I completely fell in love with this area; full of artist studios, street art, tags, rundown brick buildings and shopping. If you need a break, check out the diner Tina’s Place, an institution in Bushwick, open all day. We loved it there and the staff was just fantastic. We will be back !

OFF Paris Seine

The newly opened floating design hotel OFF Paris Seine is a definite must if in Paris this summer ! It’s a completely new experience, an urban adventure as they call it ! Just the perfect place if you want to disconnect from the city life.

The hotel is centrally located on the Seine next to the Charles de Gaulle Bridge, making it accessible from both Gare de Lyon and Gare d’Austerlitz. It is a collaboration between the French design boutique hotel chain Elegancia and Citysurfing. The  converted catamaran occupies 58 rooms and four suites, a bar, restaurant,  panoramic lounge, solarium, swimming pool and summer terrace and the rates run between €160 and 450 ($171-483) a night.

Look out, cause the floating hotel will also host a programme of art and festive events in summer.

Live Off on the Seine !

The eccentric and daring Tangier

Only 12 kilometrs across the strait from Spain you will find an exotic new world in a legendary North African city that has everything from cool cafés and new boutique hotels to glorious beaches, a fascinating history, and the world’s most famous kasbah.

Tangier

Tangier was a bohemian mecca in the 1960s, and now the designer crowd is flocking back. For much of the 20th century, the Moroccan city was a bohemian dream, where smugglers and spies mixed with writers, artists, musicians.

TangierIn recent years, the Kasbah has seen the birth of a number of small hotels and guesthouses created within former kasbah townhouses and palaces. The one I prefer is La Tangerina Hotel (Riad Sultan 19, Tangier, Morocco) , a bohemain hotspot, right out of a Gypset book.

TangierThe restaurant to look out for is El Morocco Club (Place Tabor, Kasbah, Tangier), it’s the latest hype place in Tangier. Located at Bab Kasbah, in a typical Moroccan dar, it is teeming with surprises. Don’t miss the man in charge, our friend Oscar Ama Badji, the coolest guy in town !

Visiting Tangier you will be struck by the number of lively cafés in the city. One of the most famous ones is Café de Paris, a great mix of locals, expats, and travelers.

TangierAnother one is the Hafa, one of my favorite places in Tangier, just a short walk from the Kasbah. The breathtaking view and the thé à la menthe make it well worth the visit.

TangierTangier has a big literary legacy so don’t miss the book shops Librairie des Colonnes and Librairie Les Insolites, they both have a fantastic choice of books from authors such as Bowles.

If you’re in Tangier for shopping, a stop at my favourite shop is a must, the incredible Bazar Tindouf, it’s a caverne d’alibaba, full of carpets, lanterns, ceramics, ancient doors and other fabulous treasures.

TangierLas chicas is a new concept shop (52 rue Kacem Guennoun, porte de la Kasbah), where traditional craft meets contemporary design. A fantastic new pearl on the market !

Tangier is a place to just meander around the tumbling streets and cafes’. It’s such a mysterious place, to understand it, you have to look behind its doors, but once you give yourself some time, you will find Tangier to be eccentric, enduring and very charming.

Tangier

The legend has it that you don’t choose Tangier, but that Tangier chooses you and Tangier chose me !

Finnnish Summer Memories, Part II

If you drop by Helsinki on one of your trips, don’t miss the Design District Helsinki. Helsinki is paradise for any design lover, what I love about this city is that you have good design everywhere ! Helsinki was also awarded the World Design Capital in 2012.

Helsinki design districtThe Design District is a creative melting pot in the heart of the city, an area full of design and antique shops, fashion stores, museums, art galleries, restaurants and showrooms. A place where you can find  interesting new names, avant-garde, trend-setters and more.

-creativity, uniqueness, experiences, design and Finnish urban culture in one district –

Chefchaouen, the blue town !

This is my next trip for sure, I have been dreaming about this little Morrocan town for some time now. It just seems to be such an inspirational and spiritual place…

It has a rich history, beautiful natural surroundings and wonderful architecture, but what strikes me the most are the vivid blue walls in its “old town” , the medina.

Wouldn’t you just like to wander around its small and narrow streets, meeting artists and looking up local handicrafts ! Magic is the only word !
